“My art is the result of my psychological expulsion, featuring whatever paint, water, salt, and other obscure nearby materials end up getting involved in the process. Each painting is a self-portrait, a slow-exposure snapshot of my evolution among various states of mind. The work is at once an exploration of the contents of my psyche and the nature of aesthetics as I watch each form develop in reaction to the emotion I transfer to it. I’m awed and inspired by the way a painting creates itself. The way I work and the materials I work with facilitate a very fluid, unpredictable process that I’m really only partly in control of; in the end I make it my goal to highlight the designs that somehow emerge from my arbitrary and purely expressive movements. With every painting I start, I feel lost; I can never remember a process to use, a set of guidelines to follow. It’s different every time, and I hope for my paintings to express to the viewer a sense of the experience I had in creating it and that they may connect with my work- and, consequently, my self- on an emotional level.” - Meris Catherine Drew.
